Workshop Overview:
Our water, our decisions, our future.

What can we do to ensure we have clean healthy drinking water now and for future generations?

How we govern and shape development patterns in our community directly affects the quality of the water we and our children will drink.  Planning land use at the watershed level protects the sources of our drinking water by protecting land where development would harm the raw water sources we depend on for our drinking water.

Join us to learn the Steps to Protect Public Drinking Water.

The Workshop is FREE and open to the Public.

This half-day workshop will help public water suppliers, municipal officials, planners, watershed groups, and residents explore:

  • how communities can determine, map and protect the areas surrounding their drinking water sources
  • how to facilitate better local decision making for land use and open space preservation
  • how to involve the public in contamination prevention and education efforts
  • how DEP’s Source Water Protection Technical Assistance  Program (SWPTAP) can provide your community with a game plan to protect public health and prevent contamination before it happens.

Wherever your tap water comes from, all drinking water sources are vulnerable to a wide array of contaminants. Water suppliers can treat water through technological processes, but protecting drinking water sources up front is the best line of defense to protect public health, ensure high quality drinking water, and keep treatment costs down.

Armed with information about where local drinking water comes from, communities can make informed decisions about:

  • where development should occur
  • best areas to preserve as open space
  • how to improve raw water quality and reduce risk
  • how emergency responders can help
  • backup plans for new and alternative water supply.

At the workshop, you’ll also learn:

  • How to locate drinking water recharge areas
  • How to get information about potential contamination sources, how to deal with them
  • How water Time of Travel can help determine critical open space areas
  • How land use impacts water quality and treatment costs
  • Examples of local community protection programs in PA
  • Technical and financial resources available from PADEP, LWVPA-CEF WREN Project, PRWA, and others to develop local protection programs.

The free workshop is funded by DEP, and presented by the League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania WREN Project, Pennsylvania Rural Water Association (PRWA), American Water Works Association PA Section (AWWA), and local partner organizations.

DEP approved for 3.5 Contact Hours for water operators if eligible
